SCHOOL

Christchurch Boys' High School, often referred to as CBHS, is a single sex state secondary school in Christchurch, New Zealand. It is situated on a 30-acre site between the suburbs of Riccarton and Fendalton, 4 kilometres to the west of central Christchurch. The school also provides boarding facilities for 130 boys.

CHALLENGE

The in-depth scope of the project and the deliverables of both interior and exterior solutions was paramount for the completion of the Caddick and Caldwell block upgrades at CBHS. Energylight commissioned 13 lighting solutions to compliment the daylight that has been interwoven into the teaching spaces. The upgrade needed robust detail with materials that complimented the exisiting buildings but provided distinction between both the old and new spaces.

SOLUTION & RESULT

A successful collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Beca, and Athfield Architects shows beautifully low glare recessed Evalas helping to provide a stimulating learning environment in the new Caddick and Caldwell Blocks at Christchurch Boys Highschool. Energyline’s 108R was commissioned to create bespoke accent lighting into communal learning spaces (as shown below). The use of colour is desired in schools and is aligned with a material pallet that takes into account acoustic panels, furniture and the presence of natural daylight. The colour panelling used in these two spaces provides a distinctive, focussed area with the artificial light complimenting the natural light from the adjacent glazing.
