"This project contributes to a more sustainable future by reducing the power use and energy consumption of the Viaduct Harbour custom indirect public lighting installation by more than 60% (47,650.00 KW/h pa)."

- Auckland Viaduct

CHALLENGE

Auckland Transport (AT) inherited the lighting from Waterfront Auckland. This was considered to be sub-standard. Due to the everyday use, maintenance costs and lighting quality, LDP was engaged to review and propose a solution.

The challenge to replace the current system with a fully LED replacement was the key focus. The aim being to improve overall energy efficiency, reduce energy use, minimise light pollution, maintenance costs and improve light quality. All of this is in order to increase road users’ safety within the community.

SOLUTION

This project contributes to a more sustainable future by reducing the power use and energy consumption of the Viaduct Harbour custom indirect public lighting installation by more than 60% (47,650.00 KW/h pa) and reducing light pollution. It was also designed to reduced maintenance needs lowering CO2 emissions from maintenance vehicles. Energy savings reduce CO2 by 6.13 Tonnes.

This solution also encourages patronage by improving light quality and therefore discouraging crime.

This was all achieved through the ERCO Kona's ability to provide high light levels, with low energy use and low glare output. The architectural look of the luminaire meant that it added an aesthetically pleasing element to the high end space in the Auckland Viaduct. The technical quality of the luminaire and excellent lighting design by LDP ensures a safe, efficient, aesthetic and sustainable solution for Auckland Transport.

The solution was so well designed it was recognised for an IESNZ Lighting Award.
