Te Nikau Grey Hospital

COMPANY

Te Nīkau Grey Hospital and Health Centre was upgraded in 2020 to ensure the building was up to code in the event of any seismic activity. The hospital serves as the main public hospital on the West Coast and caters to the rural surrounding towns.

CHALLENGE

CCM, Jacobs and WSP worked with the West Coast District Health Board to formulate a compliant seismic certified hospital to replace the original 1950’s design that served Greymouth. The challenge was to ensure the building was sustainable, affordable and supported an evolving model of care incorporating creative health service delivery. Designing seismic-resilient foundations for a new building on this site posed a challenge, coupled with the highly corrosive and Earthquake prone West Cost environment, yet the location was convenient for serving rural communities on the West Coast, and the site was large enough to accommodate expansion.

SOLUTION

Collaborating with our client WSP, Energylight was able to recommend a series of code-compliant lighting solutions for the new hospital build.

The 56-patient bed hospital was fitted with a variety of lighting options across communal and examination theatres. New Zealand made Energylight Evala 300 with Dali controllers were commissioned into the CT Scan and examination rooms in the facility. These luminaires were selected due to their high-quality NZ aluminium construction and dust-proof capability. As the luminaires are manufactured in the South Island this provided low delivery risk for the project and assists with future building maintenance.

For the Corridors, a decision was made to utilise recessed Energyline in a continuous, integrated ceiling channel arrangement. The offset linear approach provides a clean and contemporary effect which is perfect for uniformly illuminating corridors in the health setting offering safety and comfort for users.

Further to this, Energyline 55R was used in the stairways not only providing suitable passage lighting for patients and staff but also creating a unique and striking result.

RESULT

Wednesday 29^th July 2020 marked the official opening of the hospital and healthcare centre. Te Nikau delivered on its promises by first and foremost ensuring a strong foundation that was IL3 and IL4 compliant. The lighting provided by Energylight was able to combine function and aesthetics in its application. The longevity of both the Energylight Evala and Energyline luminaires proved fit for purpose in their designated installations. Remote access was pivotal in the new project with operating theatres in the new hospital equipped with technology that can enable specialist consultants to monitor procedures remotely and help when required. This capability has proved particularly useful when the hospital is difficult to access (also being 3 hours away).
